يُضطر أحمد أفندي عاكف لترك تعليمه والعمل موظفًا بعد فصل أبيه من وظيفته، في حين تضطر الأسرة للانتقال من حي السكاكيني لحي خان الخليلي مع تزايد الغارات إبان الحرب العالمية الثانية، وهناك يقع أحمد الكهل الأربعيني في حب جارته نوال ابنة الستة عشر عامًا، فيما يعود أخوه رشدي من أسيوط ويتبادل الحب مع نوال فيخفي أحمد شعوره وإحباطاته. غير أن استهتار رشدي يؤدي به إلى الإصابة بمرض السُّل، مخلفًا حزنًا شديدًا بين أفراد أسرته. نُشرت الرواية عام 1945، وانتقلت لشاشة السينما في فيلم للمخرج عاطف سالم عام 1966.
