Turn waiting time into reading time. How the simple habit of carrying a book everywhere can transform your daily life and productivity.
Turn waiting time into reading time. How the simple habit of carrying a book everywhere can transform your daily life and productivity.
كاتب هذا المقال هو Sarah Jenkins.
There is a strange contradiction in modern life: we have more ways to fill empty moments than ever before, yet many of us feel as though we never have enough time to read.
The problem may not actually be a lack of time. It may be that we have forgotten how much reading can happen in small fragments.
A five-minute wait at a café, ten minutes before an appointment, fifteen minutes on public transportation, or twenty minutes sitting in a waiting room may seem insignificant on its own. But when these moments are repeated every day, they become a surprisingly valuable source of reading time.
Carrying a book with you transforms these forgotten minutes into opportunities.
Instead of automatically reaching for your smartphone whenever there is nothing happening, you have another option immediately available. You can read a few pages, continue a chapter, learn something new, or simply disappear into a story for a while.
A book does not need to be part of an elaborate productivity system. Sometimes, the simplest reading habit is simply making sure a book is always within reach.
Waiting used to be an ordinary part of everyday life.
People waited for trains, buses, appointments, meals, friends, and meetings. They stared out of windows, talked to strangers, observed their surroundings, or carried newspapers and books.
Today, the smartphone has transformed waiting.
A few seconds of inactivity can trigger the instinct to unlock a screen. We check notifications, scroll through social media, read headlines, answer messages, or open an application without even knowing why.
The problem is not that smartphones are inherently bad. They are extraordinarily useful tools. The issue is that they have made it extremely easy to eliminate every moment of boredom.
Carrying a book creates an alternative.
Instead of asking, "What can I do to fill these five minutes?" you already have an answer.
You can read.
One of the biggest misconceptions about reading is that it requires a large uninterrupted block of time.
Many people imagine that they need an hour of complete silence before they can meaningfully open a book.
That expectation makes reading difficult.
Most people's schedules are fragmented. Work, family responsibilities, commuting, errands, and unexpected interruptions make long periods of uninterrupted concentration relatively rare.
Micro-reading solves this problem.
A few pages in the morning, another few pages during lunch, ten minutes while waiting for an appointment, and another chapter before bed can collectively become a substantial amount of reading.
The individual moments may seem insignificant.
The accumulated result is not.
Imagine that you read for only 10 minutes during otherwise unused periods each day.
Over a month, that becomes approximately five hours of reading.
Over a year, it becomes more than 60 hours.
The exact number of pages or books you complete will depend on your reading speed and the books you choose, but the underlying principle remains powerful: small amounts of consistent reading accumulate.
This is similar to the broader principle of habit formation.
You do not need to transform yourself into someone who reads for three hours every evening.
You simply need to create more opportunities to read.
Carrying a book makes those opportunities visible.
Think about the last time you were waiting somewhere.
Did you consciously decide to spend ten minutes on your phone?
Or did your hand simply reach for it automatically?
Digital devices are extremely good at exploiting moments of uncertainty and boredom.
There is always another notification, another video, another post, another headline, or another recommendation waiting.
This creates an endless stream of stimulation.
A book works differently.
It does not constantly compete for your attention.
It simply waits for you.
One of the advantages of carrying a book is that it gives you a predetermined activity.
You do not need to decide what to watch.
You do not need to choose between dozens of applications.
You do not need to search for something interesting.
The decision has already been made.
You have a book.
Open it.
This reduces friction.
And reducing friction is one of the most effective ways to make a behavior easier to repeat.
There is an important difference between reading a book and scrolling through a feed.
When you scroll, the next piece of content is unknown.
Your attention moves repeatedly from one topic to another.
A political headline may be followed by a joke, then an advertisement, then a sports update, then a celebrity story, then a short video.
Reading a book usually creates a more continuous attentional experience.
You remain inside one argument, one narrative, or one world.
That continuity can make reading feel slower at first, but it can also make it more satisfying.
Modern digital environments often encourage fragmented attention.
A person might simultaneously receive messages, notifications, emails, advertisements, recommendations, and updates from different sources.
A physical book offers a radically simpler environment.
There is a page.
There are words.
There is one narrative or argument.
Nothing is asking you to click.
Nothing is telling you that another piece of content is more important.
That simplicity can be refreshing.
A physical book provides sensory feedback that digital content does not always provide in the same way.
You can feel its weight.
You can turn its pages.
You can see how far you have progressed.
You can place a bookmark between two pages.
These small physical interactions can make reading feel more tangible.
For some readers, that physical connection strengthens the ritual of reading.
A paperback sitting in a bag is also a visible reminder.
You see it when you open your backpack.
It reminds you that reading is an activity you intended to do.
Habits are influenced by environmental cues.
When an object associated with a behavior is visible, the behavior can become easier to remember.
A book on your desk reminds you to read.
A book beside your bed reminds you to read before sleeping.
A book in your backpack reminds you that reading is available whenever you have time.
This is a simple form of environmental design.
You are not relying entirely on motivation.
You are making the desired behavior easier to initiate.
There is also something psychologically interesting about physically carrying a book.
You have made a small commitment before leaving home.
You decided that reading is important enough to deserve space in your bag.
That commitment can influence your choices later.
When you are waiting for 15 minutes, the book is already there.
The alternative is not "reading versus doing nothing."
It becomes "reading versus opening my phone."
That small change in the environment can make a surprisingly large difference.
You do not need to promise yourself that you will read an entire chapter.
Tell yourself you will read one page.
That sounds almost too easy.
And that is precisely why it works.
Once you begin, you may continue for ten or twenty minutes.
But even if you stop after one page, you have maintained the habit.
The goal is not to force yourself to read.
The goal is to make starting so easy that you rarely need to negotiate with yourself.
Public transportation can be one of the best opportunities for carrying a book.
A bus or train journey creates naturally defined periods of time.
Instead of automatically scrolling during the journey, you can open your book.
Even a short commute can become meaningful reading time.
Longer journeys can become miniature reading sessions.
The important thing is not to force yourself to read every time.
Some days you may need to rest, listen to music, or simply look out the window.
The book is there as an option.
Waiting rooms are perfect examples of fragmented time.
You might spend 20 minutes waiting for a doctor, dentist, government service, or professional appointment.
If you always carry a book, those minutes can become part of your reading routine.
You may even discover that waiting feels less frustrating because you have something meaningful to do.
Instead of thinking, "I'm wasting time," you can think, "I have time to read."
A café can become an excellent reading environment.
You do not need to turn it into a formal study session.
Order your drink, sit down, open your book, and read.
The combination of a comfortable environment and uninterrupted pages can make reading feel like a small personal ritual.
It also creates a healthier relationship with being alone.
You do not necessarily need constant digital stimulation to enjoy a few minutes by yourself.
A book can also become a conversation starter.
Someone may notice the cover.
They might recognize the author.
They may have read the same book.
They might ask whether you recommend it.
Suddenly, a private reading activity can create a real-world social interaction.
This is especially interesting because books communicate something about your interests without requiring you to say anything.
The title you are reading can reveal a topic you are exploring, a genre you enjoy, or a question you find interesting.
Shared cultural experiences create natural opportunities for connection.
Two people reading the same novel may have completely different lives, yet they immediately share something.
A simple question such as "Is it good?" can start a conversation.
A discussion about a character can become a discussion about values.
A recommendation can lead to another recommendation.
In an increasingly digital world, a physical book can create surprisingly analog forms of connection.
There is another benefit that is less obvious.
Repeated behaviors influence how we see ourselves.
If you regularly carry a book, you reinforce the identity of someone who reads.
This may sound insignificant, but identity can influence behavior.
When reading becomes part of how you see yourself, opening a book no longer feels like an occasional productivity challenge.
It becomes normal.
You are simply someone who reads.
Rituals can make ordinary activities feel meaningful.
Making coffee.
Sitting on a train.
Taking a break.
Going to bed.
If reading becomes associated with one of these moments, it can become easier to maintain.
You might develop a simple ritual:
Coffee.
Book.
Ten pages.
Then begin the day.
Or:
Commute.
Headphones off.
Book open.
Chapter finished.
These small rituals can make reading feel natural rather than forced.
If you want to develop this habit, choose the right book.
A massive hardcover may look beautiful on a bookshelf but become inconvenient in a small bag.
A relatively lightweight paperback is often easier to carry.
You can also choose books based on the situation.
A short novel may be ideal for commuting.
A collection of essays may work well for fragmented reading.
A nonfiction book divided into independent chapters can be useful when you rarely have long uninterrupted periods.
The best book to carry is not necessarily the most prestigious book.
It is the one you will actually open.
One of the biggest mistakes readers make is forcing themselves to carry a book they do not enjoy.
Reading should not feel like punishment.
If a novel does not interest you, try another one.
If a nonfiction book feels too dense, switch formats.
If a particular subject no longer interests you, move on.
The objective is to develop a sustainable relationship with reading, not to prove that you can finish every book you start.
There is no rule requiring you to finish every book you purchase.
Sometimes a book is simply not right for you at that moment.
You may return to it later.
You may never return to it.
Both are acceptable.
Giving yourself permission to stop reading a book that is not working can actually make reading more enjoyable because you remove the feeling of obligation.
Your limited reading time should be spent on books that deserve your attention.
There is one practical problem with carrying only one book.
Eventually, you will finish it.
Instead of immediately returning to your phone, have another book ready.
You can keep a second book at home or have an e-book available as a backup.
The goal is to eliminate the question:
"What should I read?"
If you always have something interesting available, the transition from waiting to reading becomes almost automatic.
Carrying a physical book is not the only solution.
An e-reader can be an excellent alternative for people who travel frequently or prefer lightweight devices.
Thousands of books can fit on a device that weighs less than many hardcover novels.
The important principle is not that paper is always superior.
It is that you should have intentional reading material available when you have unexpected time.
Choose the format that makes reading easiest for you.
Audiobooks solve the portability problem in a different way.
You can listen while walking, commuting, cooking, exercising, or performing household tasks.
They are particularly useful when your hands and eyes are occupied.
However, audiobooks serve a different purpose from carrying a physical book.
A physical book allows you to take advantage of unexpected visual reading opportunities.
An audiobook allows you to convert other activities into listening opportunities.
Both can complement each other.
Short breaks do not always need to be filled with notifications.
If your environment allows it, reading a few pages can provide a mental transition between tasks.
It can also help create a sense that your break belongs to you rather than to your inbox.
You do not need to turn every break into a productivity exercise.
Sometimes reading fiction simply gives your mind a temporary change of context.
That can be valuable in itself.
Boredom is not necessarily something that must be eliminated immediately.
Periods without stimulation can give the mind space to wander.
Carrying a book does not mean you must read every time you become bored.
Sometimes you might simply observe your surroundings.
The important thing is having a choice.
Instead of your smartphone being the automatic response to every empty moment, you can decide what deserves your attention.
Digital content often encourages rapid transitions.
Swipe.
Scroll.
Click.
Refresh.
Repeat.
Books encourage a different rhythm.
Page.
Paragraph.
Chapter.
The slower pace can feel unusual at first, particularly if you are accustomed to constant digital stimulation.
But that slower rhythm can become enjoyable.
Reading asks you to stay with something instead of constantly searching for the next thing.
A book can develop an idea over hundreds of pages.
A novel can spend time developing a character.
A nonfiction author can explain an argument gradually.
A memoir can build meaning through years of experiences.
This depth is difficult to replicate through constantly fragmented content.
Carrying a book creates more opportunities to engage with information in a sustained way.
The benefits of reading are not necessarily dramatic after one afternoon.
They accumulate.
You encounter new ideas.
You discover unfamiliar perspectives.
You learn vocabulary.
You become familiar with different writing styles.
You develop knowledge about subjects that previously seemed distant.
One book influences the next.
An idea from one author helps you understand another.
A story changes the way you interpret another story.
Over time, these connections create a personal intellectual network.
You do not need to enroll in a course to keep learning.
Books provide an informal form of lifelong education.
You can learn about history while sitting on a train.
Explore psychology during a lunch break.
Study business while waiting for an appointment.
Discover philosophy before bed.
Read fiction on a Sunday afternoon.
The possibilities are practically unlimited.
Carrying a book turns learning into something portable.
Attention is one of the most valuable resources you possess.
Every day, countless systems compete for it.
Advertising wants it.
Social media wants it.
Entertainment wants it.
News wants it.
Your work demands it.
Reading allows you to intentionally allocate some of that attention to one thing.
That is a powerful habit.
Instead of allowing every available moment to be claimed automatically, you decide what deserves your focus.
You do not need to make a dramatic lifestyle change.
Start tomorrow morning.
Put a book in your bag.
Choose something you genuinely want to read.
When an unexpected waiting period appears, open it.
Read for five minutes.
Or ten.
Or twenty.
If you finish only two pages, that is still progress.
The objective is to create the association:
Free moment → book.
Eventually, that association can become automatic.
A surprisingly simple detail can determine whether the habit succeeds.
Do not bury your book under headphones, chargers, notebooks, and other objects.
Keep it accessible.
Put it in the main compartment of your bag.
Place it on your desk.
Keep it beside your coffee.
The easier it is to reach, the less effort reading requires.
Good habits often depend less on heroic motivation than on thoughtful preparation.
When you finish one book, you should already know what comes next.
Maintain a list of books that interest you.
It can include novels, biographies, history, psychology, business, philosophy, essays, or anything else that genuinely attracts your curiosity.
This eliminates another common obstacle: finishing a book and having no idea what to read next.
Your list becomes a personal library of future possibilities.
Reading more books is not automatically the same as reading better.
There is nothing wrong with reading 50 or 100 books a year.
But the number itself should not become the objective.
A difficult book that changes the way you think may be more valuable than ten books you barely remember.
Reading should ultimately serve curiosity, enjoyment, learning, reflection, or some combination of these.
The goal is not to win a reading competition.
The goal is to build a richer relationship with books.
You do not need a perfect schedule.
You do not need a dedicated library.
You do not need expensive reading equipment.
You need a book you want to read and opportunities to open it.
Carrying a book solves one of the simplest problems in reading: availability.
When the opportunity appears, the book is already there.
Carrying a book with you may seem like a small habit, but small habits can change how you experience everyday time.
A waiting room becomes a reading session.
A commute becomes a chapter.
A coffee break becomes a few pages.
A delayed appointment becomes an opportunity to continue a story.
The real benefit is not simply that you finish more books.
It is that you begin treating your attention differently.
You stop seeing every empty moment as something that needs to be filled by a screen. You become comfortable choosing depth over constant stimulation. You create small pockets of learning, imagination, and reflection throughout the day.
And perhaps the best part is that there is no complicated system required.
Put a book in your bag.
The next time you have ten unexpected minutes, open it instead of automatically opening your phone.
You may be surprised by how much of a book you can read in the moments you once thought were too small to matter.
Carrying a book seems like a small decision, but it can change how we perceive small periods of unused time. Waiting for an appointment, sitting on public transport or arriving early somewhere can become an opportunity to read instead of automatically reaching for a smartphone.
In our opinion, the deeper benefit is psychological. When a book is physically available, reading becomes the default option rather than something that requires a special moment to begin. This removes one of the common obstacles to developing a reading habit: waiting until we have a large uninterrupted block of free time.
Of course, carrying a book does not guarantee that we will read it. The habit still requires intention. But reducing the distance between « I want to read » and « I have a book available » is a simple behavioral change that can make reading considerably easier.
